Sometimes the most recognizable things about a fashion brand is the logo itself. While some brands lend itself to a signature style (DVF is to wrap dresses like embroidery is to Valentino), still others rely heavily on their logo being the main focus of the piece. While fashion logos play an important role in the ability to avoid duplication of exact detailing of a collection by mass retailers like Forever 21, etc., it has also remained a status symbol that crosses all societies. But here in 2010, have we shifted our focus to actual style, fit and quality of fabric over a logo? Or are we still a very label-focused culture?

I get really intimidated when I have an audience while Im shopping. I imagine them being like, Oh, why did she buy that? It is so not cute. "

With many of the actresses in attendance clad in Louis Vuitton, Brittany Snow joked that she felt a bit left out. "Apparently, I didnt get the memo," she said, pointing to her Phi top. Valentino Garavani, the retired but not retiring designer, celebrated the unveiling of his archives in suitably grand style last night at his château, Wideville, outside Paris. "I remember every detail, every dress," said the designer (who, for the record, created 12,000 of them). "Every drawing reminds me of a period, of a moment. It fills me with joy."

He wasnt alone. After checking out the split-level museum—which houses an impressive compilation of 10,000 sketches on the walls and on a lineup of iPads, along with a couple thousand letters, hundreds of pictures, awards, and the odd dress or two culled from the Rome archives—guests moved to a tented space in the garden for dinner and dancing (Madonnas on-again, off-again beau, Jesus Luz, was at the turntables). Milling among the crowd were Gwyneth Paltrow with Apple and Moses in tow, Claire Danes and Hugh Dancy, Elizabeth Hurley, Giambattista Valli, Lee Radziwill, Blake Lively, Jon Kortajarena, Jessica Alba, and Yasmin and Simon LeBon.

"I have two Valentinos that I bought in Rome," reminisced Jane Fonda. "One I wore when I accepted the Oscar for my father for On Golden Pond. Great dress. But after that I started lifting weights, so I cant close it anymore! I cant wait to get a new one—Im going to New York to do that soon. But I can still wear my black velvet one; its my favorite. Ive worn it to the White House three times."

Asked if he could see himself opening a similar archive, Marc Jacobs demurred. "Im from a different generation. We paid the models in clothes, for one thing, so we didnt hold on to anything. But thats cool. I like knowing that the clothes are all living out there in the world somewhere."

Fashion or football? At Calvin Kleins massive fête in Berlin last night, the American companys biggest-ever event in Europe, guests enjoyed both. That is, if "enjoyed" is the right word to describe the state of mind of the German attendees, who ended up seeing their country lose to Spain in the televised semifinal match. Still, there were compensations, like sipping Veuve and wandering through the citys stylishly dilapidated, historic mint building, refitted for the occasion with sculptural white platforms that served as stages for a fit squad of models.

Taking in the scene were Calvin-philes like Kellan Lutz, Lara Stone, Diane Kruger, and Navi princess and new face of the brands underwear campaign Zoe Saldana. The Avatar actress told us she was looking forward to a stint in Paris later this summer, where shell be filming the Luc Besson-scripted Colombiana—a Colombian La Femme Nikita, she called it. As for the best part of her new modeling gig? "Lots of free lingerie! Which Im wearing right now, of course," she said. We took her word for it. Kruger, for her part, slipped a Germany jersey over her Collection minidress once she was finished with the red carpet. But back to underwear: One guest observed, "This is the first time Ive seen two naked male models lounging around, and no one can take their eyes off the football match." Surely, things will get back to normal next week.

It may be a beautifully hot summer, but with rises in clothes prices coming into effect later on this year, now is the most sensible time for every shopping-addicted fashionista to invest in her autumn/winter wardrobe. We have compiled a list of our favourite Fall/Winter 2010 trends to get every head turning.

Appliqués
We are all over appliqués, and appliqués are all over our clothes this coming season, thanks to a beautiful LBD by Oscar de la Renta (oscardelarenta.com). Evocative of stained glass, the skirt is laced in appliqués and beads and is simply gorgeous. Many may say appliqués remind them of curtains, but if curtains were as luxurious as Balmain’s (balmain.com) black and gold dress, or Christopher Kane’s (net-a-porter.com/ChristopherKane) flowery black number, we would go out in curtains any day.

40’s Inspired
Floor-length stunners inspired by the 1940’s are everywhere this A/W, but it’s the shoes we are loving this winter. With a fashionably low heel (yes you heard right, the lower the better), Givency have beautiful leather pink-laced open-toe boots to make your heart, and your wallet, melt. Miu Miu created stand-out purple coats and skirts, but the sweetest of the looks goes to Galliano, for his furry earrings and bracelets.

Boudoir
It’s time to get ultra-feminine as corsets and lacy bralettes are on the menu this A/W, making every husband and boyfriend want to reach for his wallet this season (or so we wish). Fendi and Hussein Chalayan brought moulded corsets to the forefront, fighting the midriff and legs for the bust’s place as the fashionable body part this fall.

Digital Prints
In a digital age, it’s not surprising that clothes are taking on the graphic age. Thankfully this doesn’t mean walking around with a computer attached to our skirts, as the designers have conjured up a glamorous alternative. Mixing digital prints with glamour, Matthew Williamson created an ensemble of stunning dresses, with trims of the prints to keep the look minimal. Clements Ribeiro followed suit, using lashes of colour to add a graphic finesse.

Investment Pieces
In a gloomy economic climate, wardrobes often suffer, along with our credit cards. Purchasing statement investment pieces becomes essential as whimsical buys enter a mode of the past, but it isn’t just our shopping habits that are entering the times that were. Classical buys like the signature Burberry trench and Chanel suit raced down the runway, suggesting that a timeless design is the way forward when it comes to creating economical fashion.

Draping
The sun may be shining heavily now, but come winter, we will all want to be wrapped up in front of the fireplace. For the days we do risk the winter dangers of chapped skin and snowy toes, we can be safe in assurance that we won’t be cold this fall with Missoni’s mixed layering that involved up to seven different tiers.

High-waisted trousers

Call me a bit nostalgic, but I recall when Madonna first came on the scene in her now iconic lace tutu, fingerless gloves and cross earrings (oh and lets not forget the jelly bracelets from wrist to elbow!) Every girl on my block was a replica of the material girl, much to the dismay of the nuns at the private school I attended at the time. I was pretty excited to hear that Madonna and daughter Lourdes collaborated to bring that same fashion to the teen masses at Macys this summer.

Macys recently released some sketches of the fashion designs, which remain true to the 80s pop icons style. While Im not sure how tasteful a corset would look on a 13 year old (OK, not so much at all), the other pieces said to be in the line, sound like I will be revisiting my youth again via the tween market. But will this coveted niche demographic embrace it as we once did?

So we went directly to celeb stylist Riccardo Maggiore from the Riccardo Maggiore Salon who believes you can have healthy, beautiful hair during the summer months if you know how to properly take care of it for some summer hair care tips. After all he has styled and tamed Sarah Jessica Parkers glorious mane. Heres the dish:

Fine Hair:
For fine hair, long layers are ideal. The layers will create movement and volume. This is perfect for the hot, summer months.

Wavy Hair:
Wavy hair is great for summer; it’s like beach hair without even stepping foot on a beach! Work with that texture and use plenty of moisturizer to emphasize the waviness.

Curly Hair:
Heavy layers are good for curly hair too. However, you don’t want to over-layer the hair. It should be cut long enough to achieve the desired style.

Thick Hair:
For thick, straight hair, increase layers to achieve more movement and further thin hair in order to accomplish a look that heavy hair sometimes will not allow.

How can you avoid scalp/part burns?
Try to avoid parts in your hair all together! Use a fashionable headband or scarf to slick hair back. But if you must part your hair, use a sun specific product with a UV protectant, like Riccardo Maggiore Rinnova Texturizer, a unique leave-in treatment which contains sunscreen agents to protect hair from damaging UV rays.

Whats the best way to deal with summer dryness?

If you think high heels were invented for women, you should know that they actually started with men.

According to the curator of the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto, shoes with a pointed heel and a sloping pitch were first worn by men as riding boots in 9th-century Persia.

During the Renaissance period, women wore high platforms stacked heavily at the toe called chopines. They were said to rise about eight inches high and were worn in the sheer delight of displaying family wealth. These chopines later became a trend to prostitutes in Florence and Sicily.

In the 1500s, the high-heeled mens riding boot was revived by Queen Elizabeth who "acted" as a man. In the early 1700s, shorter heels started to become popular with women. By the time of the Second World War, heels started soaring higher with the discovery of using metal rods on shoes to maintain a strong and narrow structure.

Today, heels just keep on evolving as they get higher and more pointed or rounded, according to the crazy trend that echoed their history of glamour, power, oppression, sexiness, and contradiction to accepted morality.

So much was our love for heels so that designers are forever coming up with bold ideas to create high heels that would especially help women feel sexy and liberated.

2009 marks the year of lost of some of the finest celebrities in the entertainment industry. Add Hollywood actor Patrick Swayze to the list.

"Patrick Swayze passed away peacefully today with family at his side after facing the challenges of his illness for the last 20 months," said publicist Annett Wolf in a statement released on Monday.

The 57 year-old actor died of pancreatic cancer on Monday, September 14. Earlier this year, Patrick told in his interview with ABCs Barbara Walters:

"Id say five years is pretty wishful thinking. Two years seems likely if youre going to believe statistics. I want to last until they find a cure, which means Id better get a fire under it."

A gifted actor and performer, Patrick Swayze was best-known for his lead roles in Dirty Dancing and Ghost. He was People magazines Sexiest Man Alive in 1991.

Recently, weve heard about a Malaysian woman condemned to caning after drinking beer. These days, theres another indecency case that attracts worldwide media attention - a Sudanese woman has been arrested after wearing trousers.

Lubna Hussein has been arrested with 12 other women at a party on July. Deemed indecent for wearing the foreign clothing, they had faced the possibility of 40 lashes. Ten of the other women arrested with her have already pleaded guilty and have been whipped. But Lubna Hussein, a former reporter working for the United Nations at the time of her arrest, has sought the help of the media. With large publicity sorrounding her case, she has been spared from the lashes. Instead, the Sudanese Court charges her to pay a fine of 500 pounds ($209) or spend a month in jail.

Lubna Hussein has argued that her clothes, a pair of green slacks, were respectable and that she did not break the law. Refusing to pay the fine after her verdict, she says "I will not pay the money, and I will go to prison."

Sudan is a country with large cultural gap between the mostly Muslim and Arab-oriented north and the mainly Christian south. Indecency cases like that of Lubna Hussein is common but because of wide publicity, activists are now citing the vagueness of Sudans Islamic decency regulations specifically on determining what is acceptable clothing for women.

While Islamists call trouser-wearing Lubna Hussein as a prostitute worthy of harsh punishment, supporters praise her for bravely speaking out against the vagueness of indecency laws in her country and giving voice to thousands of girls who have been beaten since the 1990s.

Come to think of it, while most of us are arguing whether the latest pants are sexy or not and if tummy tuck jeans are still in fashion, some people on the other side of the world are debating if they can even wear one.

The OC star Mischa Barton was held under Section 5150 involuntary psychiatric ward at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Under 5150, a person can be held involuntarily in the psychiatric ward when they present a danger to themselves or others, or suffer from a mental disorder.

Police reported that the 23-year old actress called to ask assistance for a "health problem." LAPD Officer April Harding said there were no paramedics involved and they "assisted her with a medical issue and removed her from her home."

Perez Hilton, the celebrity blogger who writes about other peoples drama, has spilled his own drama to the world when he claimed being punched by Black Eyed Peas tour manager.

According to Perez Hilton (Mario Lavandeira in real life) he got into an argument with band members Fergie and will.i.am at the Cobra nightclub in Toronto and was punched by Polo Molina, the bands tour manager.

The blogger told the Associated Press that will.i.am. came up to him and said that he should not write about his band on his blogsite. Perez Hilton, in all his "meanness," apparently refused and called the singer a "faggot" and a gay:

"He was like You need to respect me. He was in my face. He was obviously trying to intimidate me and scare me. I was like I dont need to respect you. I dont respect you and I did say this, and I knew that it would be the worst thing I could possibly say to him because he was acting the way he was. I said You know what, I dont respect you and youre gay and stop being such a faggot."

Perez Hilton was about to leave the club when he was punched from behind.

On his Twitter account, the blogger wrote: "I am bleeding. Please, I need to file a police report. No joke." He also posted his attack video on YouTube.

Sadly though, there was little sympathy for Perez Hilton. (Honestly, I couldnt find any comments on the Web that favors the blogger.) It was like all praises were on the Black Eyed Peas. Even celebrities like Kelly Clarkson expressed how she liked Perez Hilton being punched - a "violence" worth the cause.

I have a confession to make: I know this blog is called Lipstick is My Crack, but for the past year or so ... I havent really been wearing lipstick. I know! Im not sure why, but suddenly lipstick feels unbearably heavy and unpleasant on my aging lips. It also looks a bit harsh with the natural/light makeup look I prefer. Ive been gravitating toward stains and tinted balms instead, and thats how I discovered this absolute gem of a product.

CoverGirl Outlast Lipstain is a liquid lip stain in a felt-tip pen sort of applicator. It looks like a magic marker, basically. You just kind of draw it on your lips, give it a couple of seconds to set, and go about your business. The product applies very smoothly, giving sheer but buildable color, and it smells and tastes deliciously fruity.

There are about 10 shades of this stuff, and unfortunately the majority of them are WAY too bright and garish for most skintones, but Ive found one thats just perfect for my pale coloring: shade #420, Sassy Mauve. Its pretty much an exact match for my natural lip color, but slightly more intense. I slick this on, top it with a swipe or two of Bonne Bells Dr. Pepper Lipsmacker (I do recommend a balm or gloss on top -- this product does NOT moisturize), and suddenly my lips look luscious and most definitely do NOT feel heavy or overly made-up.

A couple of possible drawbacks: this lip stain does not actually last any longer than a typical lipstick would. It doesnt survive the viniagrette dressing test, but it does wear off smoothly without pilling up or flaking like some long-lasting lip products do. Like most liquid lip stains, it will tend to emphasize any really dry or rough patches on your lips, though I find that this product does that far less than some similar products. It has to be applied to dry lips, though -- applying it OVER balm will pretty much ruin the felt-tip applicator (ask me how I know). And some folks might not like the strong smell/flavor of this product.

None of these are enough to keep me from snapping up every tube of Sassy Mauve I can find, though. I love the portability of it, the smooth application, the sheer "my lips but better" color, and the lightweight feel on my lips. And call me crazy, but I think it tastes and smells delicious!

Oh, and a little tip: storing this product vertically with the cap facing downward will keep the felt-tip applicator from drying out. I keep mine in the same jar that I use to hold my makeup brushes.

Two thumbs up on this one for sure! For the price, this product cant be beat!

Product review: Garnier Fructis Style Brilliantine Shine

So hey, everyone! I am back with that review I promised you ... um, a couple of months ago (sorry about that) ... for a Garnier Fructis Style product that actually worked for my fine, stick-straight layered hair. I should preface this review with the disclaimer that I am no longer using this product, actually. My hair has grown out quite a bit more and I dont really need the same sort of texturizing that I did when it was shorter.

However, when it WAS shorter, I was loving the heck out of this Garnier Fructis Style Brilliantine Shine Water-Based Shine Wax. (I know. I dont make up the names of these products, people. I can only assume that who ever DOES is every bit as verbose as I am.) Do you like Redken Water Wax? Well, this is the same damn thing at a fraction of the price -- remember, Redken and Garnier are both owned by LOreal. And you can buy this stuff anywhere, for cheap!

Like Water Wax, Brilliantine Shine is a light-textured, clear, water-based wax. It doesnt feel sticky like other waxes -- its very smooth and slippy. And it has that fabulous Garnier Fructis green-apple scent that I cant get enough of. Just a teensy dab of this raked through dry hair and rubbed into the ends gives a really nice separation and texture, particularly for shorter, layered styles. Its great for piecing out the ends and imparting a bit of body to the hair.

One word of caution: its easy to overdo it with this stuff and end up with greasy-looking hair, especially if your hair is fine. Start off with way less than you think you need -- you can always add more. And theres no actual hold here, so if youre looking for that, youll need a stronger wax. But if you just want a bit of separation and a finished look (not to mention fabulous-smelling hair), this is your gal.

This is definitely a two-thumbs-up product for me, even though Im no longer using it. I have such a short attention span for hairstyles that Im keeping my little half-used jar, just in case!

Let me be clear right up front: Im not saying these products are actively BAD. Neither one broke me out, caused an allergic reaction, stole my boyfriend or knocked up my sister. They didnt do anything TERRIBLE. In fact, they didnt do anything AT ALL. And therein lies the problem.

The first do-nothing product I tried was LOreal Bare Naturale Soft-Focus Mineral Finish. This is a loose mineral powder thats packaged exactly like the Bare Naturale foundation and blush -- a jar with a sifter lid and a mini kabuki-style brush in the cap. Soft-Focus Mineral Finish promises to "create a translucent, shine-free, poreless finish." Given the verbiage, Im assuming this is LOreals version of the Mineral Veil product from Bare Essentuals.

Now, I am no fan of Bare Essentuals Bare Minerals line, as longtime readers know. I find the foundation to be WAY too shiny and weird-looking for my taste. That being said, the Mineral Veil finishing powder actually DOES something -- it helps tone down the shininess of the foundation. It makes for a nice, light-textured finishing powder over other foundations as well because it really does soften your look.

But heres the thing -- LOreals Bare Naturale mineral foundation ISNT SHINY. Thats part of what makes it so awesome, and why I always recommend it over the Bare Minerals foundation (see also: LOreal is less than half the price of Bare Minerals). You dont NEED a finishing powder with this stuff -- it gives you a lovely translucent, shine-free, poreless (well, nearly) finish ALL ON ITS OWN. So that makes the Soft-Focus Mineral Finish product kind of unnecessary to begin with, dont you think?

That wouldnt matter hugely to me if this product did anything, but I am here to tell you, I bought the Translucent (#401) shade and when applied over my usual Bare Naturale mineral foundation it does not show up AT ALL on my face. It does not at all, even a little bit, change the appearance of my makeup one iota. Theres no extra luminosity, no extra mattifying, no ANYTHING. The emperor has no makeup, people.

There are a couple of different shades of this stuff, including one thats supposed to be extra luminizing and another thats supposed to be extra mattifying, but I am going to strongly suggest that you save your money and give this stuff a pass. You may as well be running a completely clean, dry powder brush over your face. Thumbs down!

The next product I tried that did nothing whatsoever was one designed for hair -- Garnier Fructis Style Fiber Gum Putty. This product promises "pliable molding" with an extra-strong hold. Um, yeah. NO.

Ive been growing my hair out just a bit -- its currently collar-length with long layers (not exactly a layered bob, but same functionality when it comes to styling and whatnot). I have fine but abundant, stick-straight hair that does not hold a style well at all, and Ive been hoping to find a drugstore product that would give me a bit of texture and separation for my layers. Unfortunately this product is NOT it.

Fiber Gum comes in a generous 5-ounce tub (for under $4 -- cant beat that!) and smells FANTASTIC, like green apples. I could sniff it all day. The texture isnt really what I would think of as a putty -- more like a thick gel-cream. Youre supposed to scoop a small amount into your palm, rub your hands together to "activate the fibers", and work it through damp or dry hair. Im pretty sure they were aiming for a drugstore knockoff of Redken Rewind with this stuff (both Redken and Garnier are owned by LOreal).

But people? I have tried this on damp hair. Ive tried it on dry hair. Ive tried varying the amount of product I use and the way I work it INTO my hair. THIS PRODUCT DOES NOTHING. I cant even tell its on! It does not change the appearance, feel, texture, whatever of my hair AT ALL, even a tiny little bit. The only thing it does is make my hair smell like green apples for maybe 30 minutes after I apply it.

So yeah, insanely cheap and mouthwateringly aromatic or not, I am going to recommend against this stuff, too. In this case, the emperor has no hair product! Thumbs down AGAIN!

Fortunately I HAVE managed to find some halfway decent drugstore crappe for my hair, and its from the Garnier Fructis line, too! So stay tuned for that review, coming up Real Soon Now. Promise!

I dont generally give purchase information for thumbs-down reviews, but if youre a glutton for punishment, you can find both of these duds at your local drug or discount department store for pretty dang cheap.

Product review: LOreal Bare Naturale Gentle Mineral Eyeliner

I know each type of eyeliner (pencil, liquid, pen, cream, etc.) has its devotees but I am a powder girl all the way. I find it so much easier to get a nice line with powder -- I just dont have the fine-motor control for the other methods. In the past Ive used whatever dark shade of eyeshadow I had lying around (my all-time fave being Jane Eye Zings, as longtime readers know) and that worked great, but I was eager to try a powdered product that was actually intended for use as eyeliner.

LOreal Bare Naturale Gentle Mineral Eyeliner is, like most of the rest of the Bare Naturale line, a powdered mineral product. Like the concealer, the eyeliner is packaged in a tiny replica of the foundation package with a sifter under the lid and a brush in the cap. In this case the brush is of the flat, slanted variety like you would use for the "push" method of applying eyeliner.

I will be honest: I dont love the brush. Its not that its a BAD brush, its just a little large for my small eyes, and the fact that its attached to the cap makes it kind of unwieldy and hard to control. Unless Im going for a thick, smoky line above my top lashes -- in which case the included brush works great -- I apply this with my beloved MAC #266 brush (shaped the same, but smaller and with a longer handle).

The product is easy to apply, as long as you make sure to tap any excess off the brush after dipping it into the powder. Since this is a powdered MINERAL product, its very concentrated and a little goes a long way. If you get little specks of it on your eye area and try to wipe them away, youll end up with smears all over the place.

That being said, once this stuff is on it does NOT budge. It wears all day without migrating into wrinkles and creases or fading away to nothing (a problem Ive had when using powdered eyeshadow as liner). I really love the way this stuff looks freshly applied all day long, even in humid weather!

The shade I bought, #809 Defining Bronze, is gorgeous for those of us who like a nice, deep brown liner. It also comes in four other shades, including black, blue, olive and another brown. Can you spot the glaring omission from this lineup? No purple! I personally love a deep plum eyeliner for my olive-green eyes, so I really wish this product came in that shade. Why two browns and no purple, LOreal? Gah!

Anyway, I am giving this product a thumbs up for the sheer quality of the minerals and the fantastic staying power. Will I wear it every day? Nope. Not until they expand the shade offerings a bit. But it really is a terrific liner if youre a powder gal like me!

Hey, everyone! Remember me? I know, its been almost an entire year since I posted anything! I have commitment issues, you have abandonment issues; lets just acknowledge that and move on, shall we? Because I have been trying a bunch of new products over the past several months, and we need to talk, people!

This LOreal Bare Naturale Gentle Mineral Concealer has been out for a while now, but I resisted trying it until recently. Why? Because its a POWDER. I dont know about the rest of you over-40 gals, but my skin has been getting drier as Ive gotten older, and putting powdered ANYTHING around my crepey, crowsfoot-bedecked eyes sounds like a horrible idea. Most powders tend to settle into my fine lines, emphasizing them to the point that they may as well be glowing neon.

Well, I am happy to report that this concealer doesnt settle into fine lines AT ALL, in my experience. In fact, I think I kind of love this stuff!

Lets start with the packaging, which is very cute -- like a mini version of LOreals Bare Naturale powdered mineral foundation (which I already love, as you know). Like the foundation, the concealer has a built-in brush in the cap that is actually not entirely useless! I know! I was shocked, too, but its just the right size for the undereye area and the bristles are nice and soft. However, if you need more precise application like for blemishes and whatnot, youll need to use a smaller brush.

The product itself, while a powder, actually feels a bit creamy on the skin. The finish is completely matte, though -- no dewiness or sparkles -- which is a plus. It blends very easily and again, I am actually shocked by the degree to which this does NOT settle into fine lines or emphasize crepiness at all. For me this stuff lasts all day without budging, and the Light shade coordinates nicely with both the Soft Ivory and Light Ivory shades of Bare Naturale foundation.

The only area where this concealer falls a bit short is in coverage. If you have very dark circles or are trying to cover up some deep pigmentation, this is not the concealer for you. It does a fine job evening things out and brightening the eye area, and it does an okay job covering my fairly mild undereye circles, but it will not magically erase dark circles or hyperpigmentation.

Since my major eye issue is sagging/wrinkling rather than dark circles, this stuff works just great for me. Im giving it a thumbs up!

I was sure I had reviewed these products already, but a quick scan through my archives tells me I havent. I guess I discovered them during my fall/winter blogging hiatus and completely forgot to review them. I have been a BAD BLOGGER. These two products, used together, more or less saved my skin this winter. (Incidentally, I purchased both of these products; they were not sent to me for review.)

First lets talk about Alpha Hydrox AHA Souffle. This is a skin cream with 12% glycolic acid, a type of alpha hydroxy acid. We are talking some SERIOUS exfoliation here. The cream itself blends easily but feels a little bit heavy on the skin. Its not that its overly emollient or greasy or anything, but you can definitely feel it. Frankly, that took me a while to get used to, and at first I wasnt sure I loved this product because of it.

The cream also produced a slight burning tingle the first few times I used it. You will DEFINITELY want to do a patch test if your skin is even remotely sensitive. Youll also need to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen religiously when using this product -- it pretty much sloughs off the top layer of dead cells on your skin, revealing new skin cells underneath, and those new cells need protection!

As far as results go, I am beyond thrilled with this stuff. I use it at night only, and after a couple of weeks my skin was noticeably smoother and softer to the touch. It also helped even out some redness and some old acne scarring (not the pitting kind, the pigment kind), and when I use this stuff at night, my makeup applies like a dream the next morning.

The best part about this is the price -- about $15 at the drugstore, for a jar that has lasted me a good five or six months (again, only using it at night). I would put the performance of this product right up there with Z. Bigattis Re-Storation Skin Treatment, a product Ive used in the past that costs -- are you ready for this? -- $150 per jar. I KNOW! Do my paltry math skills fail me, or is that TEN TIMES as much as the Alpha Hydrox stuff costs?

My only problem with this product is that its pretty no-frills. Its a kick-ass skin-stripper, but it doesnt provide anything in the way of moisture, despite its cream base. That means I have to use a moisturizer on top of it, and thats where DHC Extra Nighttime Moisture comes in. I tried a sample of this stuff over the Alpha Hydrox one night, when I was desperate for a little added moisture, and discovered that the two products compliment each other wonderfully.

DHC Extra Nighttime Moisture is also a no-frills product. There are no retinoids in here, no AHAs, no peptides or whatever the latest sexy skincare ingredient is. Its just a really lovely, extremely emollient but non-greasy cream that moisturizes like no ones business and feels wonderful on the skin. This stuff is chock-full of emollients and humectants -- olive oil, squalane, glycerin and sodium hyaluronate, to name a few. It is, quite simply, a kick-ass nighttime moisturizer. Im not going to claim its drugstore-cheap, but at $30 per jar (it sometimes goes on sale for less -- thats when I bought mine) its on par with lower-end department store skincare lines (think Clinique, etc.).

These two products used together every night have been my winter skincare magic bullet. Winters in central Texas are kind of weird -- it can be humid and rainy one day, dry and windy the next. You just never know, and I spend most winters switching back and forth between products to try to keep up. I still break out hormonally, or if I use an ingredient to which Im sensitive, but when the air is dry my skin is a parched, flaky mess. Ive been using these two products every single night since the temperatures first dropped below 80 with any degree of regularity, and my skin has stayed balanced, hydrated, clear and smooth throughout.

As we move toward warmer weather Im not sure how my skin is going to do with this routine, but you can bet both of these products will be in my skincare rotation NEXT fall and winter as well. And of course, if I find something that works better for me in spring and summer, you all will be the first to know!

Dollar store soap deathmatch: Pears vs. Yardley

Longtime readers may be shocked to learn that in recent months, I have thrown aside my beloved Softsoap Milk & Honey body wash in favor of bar soap. This is due to a couple of factors:

I got bored.
I spotted some non-sucky bar soaps at my local dollar store.

Yeah! Its not all Irish Spring and Lifebuoy up in there anymore, yall! And its not all no-name generic soaps made out of battery acid and bacon grease (I just made that up; dont email me) anymore, either. I am here to tell you that the dollar store has GOOD SOAP.

The first one I spied with my frugal little eye was Pears.

Ah, Pears. I remember this soap fondly from my childhood in the 60s and 70s. I cant remember actually using it all that much, although the scent (which to my nose is reminiscent of spiced fruit compote) is certainly familiar. I think I remember the magazine advertisements more than I remember the soap itself.

Regardless, I snapped up a few boxes and brought them home. They languished in my guest bath, looking retro-cool, for a couple of months before I finally broke down and opened a box to actually use it.

I looove the fragrance of this soap. LOVE IT. I could sniff the bar all day. And it makes a wonderful lather. HOWEVER, and maybe this is a function of the particular hardness/softness of my water, it does not rinse clean. No, it leaves a sort of sticky, squeaky film behind. And I do not like that.

So, back to the dollar store, where this time I picked up a bar of Yardley Oatmeal & Almond soap.
I do NOT remember Yardley from my youth, except in passing, but I know its a longtime favorite of anglophiles the world over. The scent of this one won me over in a heartbeat. I am a sucker for all things almond.

In the bath, the fragrance of this bar is wonderful. Its especially nice in the winter, all almond-creamy and comforting. The lather is nice and thick, and most importantly, it rinses clean and leaves my skin wonderfully soft with just a wisp of that almond fragrance left behind. Score!

I dont even mind the scrubby bits in this bar (they are oatmeal and not almond shells, I dont think) because if you use a washcloth/pouf/hands they dont seem to come off and get stuck all over you. You CAN get some exfoliation going by rubbing the bar directly on skin, though.

I was so enamoured of the Yardley soap that I went back to the dollar store for more, and thats when I noticed they had the lavender variety, too.
So, you know, I had to try THAT one as well. I like this just fine -- it has a nice lavender scent that is especially soothing in the evening, and it rinses clean just like the oatmeal/almond variety -- but my skin didnt like this one as much. Or rather, er, my girl bits didnt. Yeah, I dont know how else to say it, yall. Something about this was slightly irritating to my delicate parts, if you know what Im saying. It has since been relegated to the sock drawer, to act as a sachet.

So for me, the clear winner in the battle of the dollar store soap is Yardley Oatmeal & Almond. I am in love with the fragrance, the lather, and the way it makes my skin feel.

And I refuse to tell you how many boxes of this stuff now occupy my bathroom closet.

Product review: Olay Definity Illuminating Cream Cleanser

Okay, so heres what happened: I ran out of my beloved Juice Organics Nourishing Cleanser, and CVS had stopped carrying it. Rumor has it that its available at Ulta, but I was too lazy to schlep myself all the way to Ulta. I wanted to shop at CVS! CVS, dammit! So for some reason, I bought this new-ish Olay cleanser. I think because it had "cream" in the name, and I really didnt want anything foamy. In the winter, foamy cleanser = alligator skin, for me.

First of all, can we talk about the packaging of this product, and how very badly it sucks? Olay Definity Illuminating Cream Cleanser comes in a squeeze tube that sits on its cap. Which is all well and good. But the way you dispense it is to twist the cap -- not OFF, mind you, just give it a counter-clockwise twist -- and squeeze out the cleanser through a teeny hole in the center of the very large cap. Not only does this cause nasty wads of dried-out cleanser gunk to accumulate all over what is essentially the BOTTOM of the container, creating a huge mess if you store it cap-down like youre apparently supposed to, but its also damn near impossible to twist the cap open, dispense the product, and twist the cap closed with wet, slippery hands. This is seriously the stupidest packaging idea in the history of ever and Im frankly a little pissed off about it. In case you couldnt tell.

Okay, now lets talk about the actual cleanser itself. Fortunately, it doesnt suck as badly as does the packaging. It is indeed a non-foaming cleanser, though Id describe it more as a milk/lotion than a cream because its not all that thick. On the plus side, it hasnt caused any breakouts or dryness whatsoever and it does seem to smooth and clarify my skin somewhat. On the minus side, it has a strong perfumey fragrance and it has little scrubby bits in it.

Now, I like scrubby bits just fine in my MORNING cleanser. They sort of wake me up and make me feel like Im starting the day with a clean slate, face-wise. But I bought this to use at night, as the second step in my two-step cleansing routine (the first step being DHCs Deep Cleansing Oil, as always), and scrubby bits at night annoy the hell out of me unless Im doing it on purpose, like using an exfoliating scrub AFTER my cleanser.

Yes, Im picky. Hello, have we met?

I am not saying I hate this cleanser. I dont. I hate the PACKAGING, but the cleanser is okay. However, I would not repurchase it because of the whole packaging/scrubby bits/fragrance deal.

Looks like Im going to have to make a trip to Ulta after all. Damn.

And for those of you who read a lot of beauty blogs and have heard the buzz, I want to make it clear up front that my decision has nothing whatsoever to do with that ridiculous New York Times article that came out recently, claiming that beauty bloggers are only in it for the swag. I was not at all involved in that article and made this decision long before it was published. (And hello, I had been blogging for nearly two years before I even began accepting free crappe for review.)

The basic reasons, if you must know, boil down to these: First, if you send me something then I feel obligated to try and review it in a timely fashion, which puts a deadline on me, which makes it feel like work, which sucks all the fun out of it for me. Im weird, I know. Second, given that Ive decided not to go commercial with this blog (see below), I cant justify the cost of renting a mailbox so you can send me stuff to talk about on my blog that isnt making me any money. You dig?

Well, yeah. I kind of am. The thing is, I have thought long and hard about making this blog commercial -- selling ads and printing press releases and coupons/contests and that whole bit -- and Ive decided that I just dont want to. I started this blog as a place to talk about the makeup, skincare, fragrance, clothing and accessories I was ACTUALLY BUYING/USING at the time, the stuff I loved and hated, and I want to get back to that and keep it that way. I want my readers to know, when they read one of my product reviews, that Ive actually purchased and have been using that product. I want them to trust that Im giving them my absolute 100% honest opinion with no outside influences.

There are PLENTY of blogs out there that feature targeted ads, print new product releases and event notices, run contests, and share coupon codes. I read and love several of them, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with running a blog that way. But this is MY blog, dammit, and I want to have FUN with it. Turning it into a commercial venture, while tempting from a financial standpoint, would not be fun for me. Not right now, anyway. If I change my mind, you all will be the first to know.

So for now, its back to writing about the stuff Im buying, using, loving and hating, along with the occasional tip/tutorial/obsession, in a 100% commercial-free environment. I hope some of you will stick around for it. Because IT WILL BE FUN.

Peter Som has so much going for him these days. He is the new Creative Director for Bill Blass, he recently collaborated with Gucci Westman to create P.S. Kiss for Lancome (available in October) and now NRDC Equity Partners has bought a majority stake in his company. With so much excitement, I really expected his Spring SS08 RTW collection to mimic this upward peak in his career, but I was a little disappointed by the mainly monotone pieces. Silver, grey and paled down pastels dominated the color palette of Peter Soms collection, while the style screamed chic, the lack of color took away from what would be an otherwise glorious collection. A few ensembles did have a pop of color here and there--bright yellow and red belts, a deep red bead necklace; the absence of color, in both the clothing and makeup, left me feeling grim. Towards the end, the mood of the collection seemed to come to life with five gorgeous coral colored shirts, dresses and skirts. This is what I love about Spring collections; the transition from lifeless and drab to bright and carefree. After staring at snow and the landscape devoid of color all season, the last thing I want to do come Spring is slip into clothing of the same nature.
