| A Fashionable Lifestyle - Christophe Pourny August 27, 2007 21:53:10Christophe Pourny is not your average New Yorker. He may have an iPod attached to his ears and an EZ pass attached to his windshield, but this is no run of the mill hipster. Listen and you’ll only hear classical music whispering from his headphones, and that EZ pass is attached to a very stylish, but prudent, Volvo station wagon. His childhood in the south of France fed his appetite for a classic yet offbeat ascetic. While the mere mention of the region brings storybook images to any American ear, the small town of St. Raphael left him longing for the city of light - or any big city for that matter. For sure this was no country bumpkin, after all, his parents ran one of the most well known antique stores on the French Riviera. The rich and famous from all over the world passed through their shop. Worldly people with an eye for the finest treasures from the past counted on the Pourny’s to have just what they weren’t looking for, but had to have! However, while the rich and famous sought out St. Raphael to fill their weekend treasure hunting, they were sure to leave as soon as they found their gold. When they did leave, there was no one. A half empty shop, his two sisters, and an assigned relative looking after the trio. That is all you would find during the week or during the off seasons. You see these treasures did not find their own way to the Pourny estate. His parents were in fact treasure hunters themselves. So with his parents globe trotting and the chic and fabulous wintering in Paris or Palm Beach, Christophe was left with an active imagination and a promise to himself: One day he would live in Paris. College years found him studying in Paris and apprenticing for his Uncle who just happened to have one of the most famous antique shops in St. Germaine dus pres in Paris. Pierre Madel was a legend and his shop was legendary on Rue Jacob on the left bank. His following stretched from Santa Barbara to St. Tropez. His eye for antiquities was impeccable and his piercing blue eyes were unforgettable. In a former life he had been an actor. Paul Newman looks got him noticed on stage, but mostly by his wife of over 50 years – Arlette Merry. (Herself a well-known stage actress in Paris) It was in this wonderfully warm environment that Christophe learned his craft. Under Pierre’s watchful eye he was able to learn from a master and study from masterpieces that passed through the shop. It was very much this environment that fostered his old worldly charm and passion for all things from times past. It was there that Christophe made another promise to himself: One day, New York. Fifteen years ago ,Christophe Pourny kept that promise and moved to New York to start his own business. How could it not be in the world of antiquities? Over the years Christophe has built a strong and loyal following with the most celebrated interior designers in the business. He is the go-to guy for everything from guilds to finishes. He is equally qualified and specialized in restoration or creation. His work has graced the pages of most major publications and designer retrospectives. His work with the City of New York in City Hall and Gracie Mansion are projects that he is most proud of. After many years as one of New York’s premiere wood finishers, the studio of Christophe Pourny launches its collection of custom wood frames. The first model unveiled is the Rue Jacob. The purity of design and masculinity of its proportions are reminiscent of its namesake. Elle Decor recently published the first frame in the monthly "Hot List" column. The spot is coveted by everyone in the business as the publication is the benchmark of the interior design industry. The response was overwhelming and even more than the designer himself anticipated. During our interview he told me, "After 15 years I sometimes feel like a jaded New Yorker, but when I saw the reaction from the Elle Decor readers - I was shocked." He shouldnt be; Pournys work is second to none and the Rue Jacob is a perfect example of the quality he is known for. The Franklin Report gives the studio a very hard to come by-"Highest imaginable work quality." For more information about Christophe Pourny or the Rue Jacob collection, contact

| Fashion PR: Fashion Indie Magazine Launch Party August 27, 2007 21:14:45Fashion Indie, the best blog for Indie fashion, is now launching a print magazine. Theyll be holding a launch party during New York Fashion Week (and it looks like its going to be pretty rockin!) Details: What: Fashion Indie Magazine Launch Party
When: September 7, 2007
Where: Boucarou at 64 East 1st Street
Time: 10pm
Indie Goodness: Love Brigade Fashion Show at midnight, DJ Tinypants will be spinning the tunes; V2 Vodka 3 hour open bar, Guests from Americas Next Top Model & Project Runway will be on hand.
RSVP: Going.com I had the chance to talk with the uber talented Daniel Saynt, the creative mastermind (and owner) behind Fashion Indie. Read on for more Fashion Indie goodness: Shannon: What made you decide to make the leap from blog to print magazine?
Daniel: Print seemed like a natural extension of the Fashion Indie brand. We had already conquered the web with the number one site for independent fashion and we knew that in order to gain accreditation in the glossy obsessed fashion world, wed need to go to print. Fashion Indie magazine was never part of our original formula for growth, but when the opportunity presented itself to have a real presence offline we jumped at the chance. This first mini-issue is a sneak peek of what indies can expect from us in 2008. Shannon: What can we expect to see in the print version of Fashion Indie?
Daniel: Fashion Goodness with a twist. We knew we wanted to focus on the local New York fashion world, but we wanted the perspective to feel likes its coming from a really hip friend leading you through her indie-fied world. Popular areas of the website like Designer Discovery, Street Indie, The Look, and Beauty Indie get their own featured sections and the magazine is filled with independent fashion news, style advice, and editorials. Basically, anyone who loves FashionIndie.com is going to love Fashion Indie Magazine.
Shannon: Where will it be available for purchase?
Daniel: Heres the best part. Its free. We noticed free mags like The L Magazine and Connected were really making waves and growing in ad sales. Also, there has never been a free fashion magazine dedicated to indies. So if you want it, head to stores like Harriets Alter Ego, Caravan or Edge NY. Or, you can shoot us an email and well be more than happy to ship you a free copy. Arent we sweathearts?!?
Shannon: In your very first issue, is there a particular article that you are really excited about and cant wait for your readers to see?
Daniel: For the first issue we decided to showcase one of our favorite labels, Love Brigade. Weve been following their careers and love their design stories. The interview was at the Williamsburg store and took place while we were filming them for a video were producing for Beauty & Fashion TV. It was a great space and their vision for fashion design is so refreshing that we knew we wanted them in the magazine. Youll have to read. Whats really cool is that Love Brigade agreed to stage a fashion show during our magazine launch party. So all our readers can discover them in person. Shannon: What is your ultimate vision for Fashion Indie, both the blog and magazine?
Daniel: To be Vogue. No, wait to BEAT Vogue. Fashion Indie will be an empire. We are the source for the very best in emerging fashion. FashionIndie.com will grow with a directory, an online store, and social network in the works. Fashion Indie Magazine will go global with specific city guides in major cities like San Francisco, London, and Milan. We are currently producing made for TV segments for broadcast and plan to pitch pilots for indie focussed television shows in 2008. By 2010 we want to extend our online success to brick n mortar with Fashion Indies The Gallery, a hybrid store which will act as a selling space and office for Fashion Indie. After that who knows. Were too busy right now to think that far out. - [Read more] |
| Big Rock, Big Talk August 25, 2007 04:01:32 Although Im not remotely green with envy (not even a hint, an ounce, a smidgen) that my once-favorite Hills co-star is marrying Steve Sanders, I couldnt help but become obsessed with that rock. After all, Spence did make a big fuss over it -- J. Lo this, tracking device that. So whats the deal then? Theres no way this engagement ring (though he never actually uttered words resembling a proposal, did he?) is $100,000 (what he asked BFF Brody Jenner for moments before the probably-scripted purchase). So what do sources say? The token of the fame whores affection is said to be from the Ice Accessory store located at a mall in Brentwood, CA. Its not the Bennifer 1 pink diamond indeed -- not even close! In fact, its really a lavender, lemon amethyst and retails for under $3,000. OK, so $3,000 is nothing to sneeze at. But Spencer -- geez -- dont go boasting high-roller status when youre still merely clawing to get there.

| Moulay Interview August 24, 2007 12:30:00
Moulay is a high profile hairstylist making a wave in the New York salon scene! Having styled the likes of Gwen Stefani, Moulay is shear genius! So we had an insider interview with Moulay to get the scoop on his career, the styling tips and how to choose the right hair stylist. Enjoy! www.MoulayNYC.com 1. When did you first realize that you wanted to be a hairstylist? I modeled as a teenager living in Paris and saw the beautiful hair styles being created backstage. I was inspired to do it myself.
2. How did you get your start in the industry? I started as an apprentice at Alexandre in Paris, but things really started to happen for me when I came to New York and got a job working as Jonathan Sahags assistant.
3. What career moves did you make to get your current positions as NYC’s premier hairstylist? I pushed myself, everywhere I worked, to continue learning from the best stylists and perfecting my techniques. At Sahag I learned the dry-cutting technique that Jon was famous for; at Bumble & Bumble I perfected my razoring technique. I was recognized for my talent and sent to represent Bumble & Bumble in Paris, and there continued to take inspiration from that beautiful city and its culture of art and fashion. That positioned me well upon my return to New York to take on the role of Artistic Director at Lush salon. Lush unfortunately closed its doors shortly after September 11, 2001--it was located in Tribeca--but I was quickly picked up by Prive Salon in Soho. Now, as I open my own salon, all of these experiences have prepared me well to realize my vision and create a beautiful environment where each client will enjoy exceptional service and achieve a look that helps them to achieve their best image.
4. Do you or did you ever have a famous hairstylist you admired? There are many--Sahag of course. I also admire Michael Gordon, founder of Bumble & Bumble, for the incredible company he built. There are others who are simply artists--Odile Gilbert for example.
5. What do you think sets you apart from other stylist? Well, of course my skills, but really I think its my philosophy--I believe that everyone has a unique beauty that can be enhanced by the right hairstyle. Anyone who sits in my chair receives 100% of my focus, and knows that they will leave with a look that suits their hair type, their face shape, their lifestyle.
6. You have styled Gwen Stefani, Uma Thurman, as well as other celebrities. During your experience styling for celebs, who did you have most fun styling for? Celebrities are fun to work with because they have interesting lives and are fun to talk to--most of them are pretty down-to-earth. I really dont have a favorite.
7. What are the most common mistakes women make with their hair? The most common mistake is trying for a hairstyle that really doesnt work for ones hair type, bone structure, or lifestyle. Its great to bring pictures to your stylist so that he can get a sense of the image you are going for, but work with the stylist to adapt the look for you.
8. What steps should women follow when choosing or switching hairstylist? First, find a stylist that will listen to you, and will work with you to help you achieve the look you are going for. Personality fit is really important. Switching hairstylist happens all the time--if you are switching stylists but staying at the same salon, be honest. Tell the stylist you love his work, but want to try something new.
9. What is the most important thing every woman should do for their hair? Take care of your hair like you take care of any other part of your body. Regular conditioning is a must to keep hair healthy, soft, and easy to manage.
10. What do you hope to accomplish within the next few years as you continue your profession? My focus right now is on realizing my vision with the opening of my salon--a beautiful, peaceful place where clients can come to relax, enjoy their treatment, and leave feeling great about themselves. - [Read more] |
| The Fashionista Diaries: Its Not Always Glam August 24, 2007 00:12:36So my latest guilty pleasure is SOAPnet’s most recent attempt at original programming, "The Fashionista Diaries." The reality show follows a group of 20-somethings as they try to break into the fickle fashion industry in NYC. Over the last few weeks the fledglings have seen their fair share of drama, including the resignation of (drag) Queens, Juicy Couture-loving Nicole, who lacked the tough skin (and style sense) to make it in the cutthroat PR biz. The saying is true, kids: If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere. During last night’s episode, Jane mag (R.I.P.) assistants Rachel and Andrew were assigned to pull different looks for an upcoming photo shoot with Stacey Bendet, designer for Alice + Olivia. Aspiring designer Andrew even snagged some career advice from super cute Cynthia Rowley in the process. Meanwhile FLIRT! assistants, Tina and Janjay, channeling the Sex and the City gals and looking every bit ladies-who-lunch in their oversized sunglasses and bold jewelry, commiserated over their non-existent dating life during a picnic in Central Park. At Seventh House PR, Bridget’s witchy boss interviewed candidates to replace Nicole. Experienced Kristin is clearly the frontrunner (although there wasn’t much competition), but we’ll have to wait until next week to see who’s the chosen “Fashionista.” Whiny Bridget (a.k.a. “little Nicole Richie”) and uber-flirt Andrew continued to play cat and mouse throughout the entire episode, with Bridget rejecting his kiss in the end. Such a tease! Coming up next week: Tina attends church with Janjay and discovers it’s “B.Y.O.B” (Bring Your Own Bible). Love her! She’s climbing the charts as my new fav reality star, right after Whitney from MTV’s The Hills. For those of you who tuned in, whatd ya think??

| Inspired Living: Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis August 23, 2007 20:07:00
Living in luxe is a dream for most and a privilege for few. Most of us are inspired by fashion icons that we have admired over the years.
-source-
Jacqueline Onassis was a lady of great style, stature, and class. Her influence on fashion is prevalent in all aspects.
Roger Vivier "pilgrim" shoes. "In 1961 Jackie kicked off a craze for the one-shoulder dress. In 1966 she encouraged women to ditch their high, pointy heels in favor of Roger Viviers buckled flats. In 1967 she endorsed chain belts, oversize sunglasses and Yves Saint Laurents midi skirt. In 1968 it was Adolfos harem pants—bought in a post-wedding shopping spree. By 1969 Jackie was already wearing gypsy skirts and batiks out on errands in Capri. Although it may have been fashion-as-usual to the editors at Condé Nast, what she offered the American public was nothing less than a revelation." source
One of her favorite perfumes was Creed Fleurissimo.
"Thanks to Jayne Wrightsman, Jacqueline Kennedy called upon the services of Europes celebrated society decorator, Stéphane Boudin, to infuse an international perspective into the decidedly American house." "...Jacqueline Kennedy created a White House that was one part cozy family home, one part museum, and one part glittering international stage." source

| Rainy Day Fashion Accessory: The Ambient Umbrella August 21, 2007 21:53:45 On days like today, its easy not to forget your umbrella as you race to the door and out into a downpour. However, Im sure just like me, youve been caught on more than one occasion without your umbrella when the skies deceive you with sunshine. Shortly after you enter the outdoors, you find yourself getting drenched from head to toe (suddenly walking through Park Slope last summer in a torrential rain comes to mind). The Ambient Umbrellas high tech gadgetry makes it not only an item of necessity, but also your best fashion accessory on these dreary, rainy days. Embedded in the handle of this stylish umbrella is a wireless data-radio that connects to AccuWeather.com. When rain (or snow, drizzle and thunderstorms) are in the forecast, the chip receives the data and pulses blue to remind you to grab the umbrella on your way out the door. The Ambient Umbrellas canopy is also "gust-resistant" and can withstand those pesky New York City windgusts without collapsing on you. Staying dry never looked so good--dont you look smart. You can find this ingenius umbrella at www.ambientdevices.com. * Photo Credit: AmbientDevices.com - [Read more] |
| Beauty Must Haves August 21, 2007 18:33:00
There are just some things every diva must have! Here are a few of our beauty editor Judys picks to help you stay beautiful.
Powder Sunscreens:
Last month I watched a report on the benefit of powder sunscreens on a Korean News network (I did not understand much. Thank God for subtitles). It was the first time I heard of sunscreens in powder form and I was really curious to find out if it was better than the common sunscreen lotion as the reporter suggested. Two weeks later I’m at my favorite place, Sephora, and picked up Peter Thomas Roth’s Instant Mineral SPF 30. And after a month of using it, I find it to be a sort of blessing for those times of reapplication when under sun. It gives the much needed sun protection sans the greasy, sticky, annoying feeling that even the “oil-free” or “greaseless” sunscreen lotions create. With the built-in brush applicator, reapplication wherever you may be is a cinch. Major bonus: you don’t have to fret about messing up you makeup when reapplying on your face. Editors Pick:
Peter Thomas Roth Instant Mineral SPF 30, $30
Primer:
I never realized the benefit of using a primer before applying my makeup until I actually started using a primer. Now it’s a staple in my huge train case.
Benefits:
- Creates a smooth, flawless canvas allowing foundation to glide on smoothly and evenly.
- Skin looks perfect. It shrinks large pores and creates a satin-like look and feel. You’ll find that you won’t have to bother with foundation.
- Oil-absorbing. Great for those with oily skin and will not over-dry those with dry skin such as myself. Not only will your makeup look fresh, but your skin will feel fresh throughout the day and/or night. You can literally say good bye to the icky, sticky, oily feel of makeup after a few hours.
Note: So you don’t have to worry about getting the necessary UVA and UVB protection use Peter Thomas Roth’s Instant Mineral SPF 30 or any other powder sunscreen before or after applying your makeup.
Editors Pick:
Laura Mercier Foundation Primer, $30 - [Read more] |

| Style Talk With Kristopher Dukes August 17, 2007 07:00:00 Kristopher Dukes is the queen of fashion writing and one of Mimis fabulous Glamour Girls. Readers worldwide love her style, grace and most of all edge. K knows fashion so it was quite a treat getting the dish on her kick-ass style.
Describe your style in one word. Boss.
What is your best-kept fashion secret? I own a pair of New Balance sneakers for jogging, but they’re like models that don’t do cocaine—nobody believes they exist.
What are the five fashion essentials every woman should have in her closet? A very little black dress, a mink coat, a snakeskin clutch, big, glammy Jackie O glasses, and “fuck you”—not “fuck me”—heels,
Who is your style icon? Before there was Posh and her ridiculous glam, there was jazz baby Daisy from The Great Gatsby.
What is the biggest fashion mistake a woman can make? Not styling to make herself happy. Or wearing chunky heels less than four-inches tall.
What is your favorite outfit? I’ve a bit of a uniform: a neo-flapper frock, four-inch heels, a snakeskin bag, a “K” initial necklace, and smoky eyes.
What is your favorite way to accessorize? Too-tall heels, more for a masculine love of height and less out of a femme vanity for my legs, and some sort of glammy dead animal. Maybe a fur muff, if it’s summer and I’m going to a vegan café.
If you could give women a fashion tip to be fabulous what would it be? Dress yourself so you want to have sex with yourself. Everyday. - [Read more] |

| Radiance Restoration August 17, 2007 06:27:00As summer winds to a close, and the tans that weve all worked for begin to fade- Its now time to take that element ravaged skin and prep it for the dry winter months to come.
My good friends at Origins at the Houston Galleria recommended a regime that will do just that, transform that dull matte skin into vibrant, hydrated and luminous. Two of which really stood out as truly fabulous, The Checks and Balances Frothy Face Wash(8.5 fl oz. for $20) as a daily AM/PM Wash, its creamy texture felt like velvet in the early mornings and even better after an exhausting day. Secondly, the True difference maker, The Activated Charcoal Clear Improvements mask(3.4 fl oz. for $20).
Using it twice a week calmed and toned the skin, neutralizing imperfections. Two fabulous Products that went beyond the call of duty. Backing the old saying , when it comes to a flawless beauty, you must start with flawless skin...

| Fall Accessory Trends: Retro Lady August 17, 2007 06:08:00With fashion continuing on its feminine track, many details on the fall runway were geared toward the more pomp and circumstance of finishing touches. Gloves, hats and fur all hark back to the days of our grandmothers style of dress and with more emphasis on vintage, why not take a trip down memory lane or in grandmoms closet; which ever is closer, and infuse retro finishing into your fall wardrobe.
Gloves hark back to a time when ladys were proper and boys were polite. Todays gloves are parts ladylike and parts tough ranging from leather to lace and everything in between. Adding a great leather glove to a flouncy dress is a great way to add vintage appeal with modern feel.

A topper is exactly that, something to top off your look. Hats add polish and signal refinement, when all men wore hats and tipped them to passing ladies. Dont you miss the good ol days? This fall, milinery is huge and several designers took to the top and provided us with amazing headgear.
Fur is to vintage as Geritol is to, well you know... However, nothing spells vintage than fur, hats, wraps, stoles and coats. Old Hollywood glamour revolved around fur-wearing starlets and todays designers are bringing it back.
Taking the retro vibe even further, many catwalks feature vintage hairstyles a la Veronica Lake and sirens of the Hollywood era. This is a great way to play up the inner vixen inside and experiment with a new look. Well coiffed curls are all about setting and attitude. Do an old-fashioned roller set and have luxurious hair for weeks.
