| Aston Martin Preps For Repeat Le Mans Victory, We Gawk At Familiar Colors [Racing News] June 2, 2008 14:40:00 As if the pair of victorious Aston Martin DBR9 race cars arent delicious enough, this year theyre rocking Gulf Oil livery. With the 24 Hours Of Le Mans just two weeks away, teams have been testing their cars on La Sarthe in advance of the big day and weve got a batch of photos of cars 009 and, appropriately, 007. In addition to these beauties, Aston Martin is also powering an LMP1 Prototype being entered by Charouz Racing. Photos and press release below.
ASTON MARTIN COMPLETES WET LE MANS TEST DAY Aston Martin has completed the traditional pre-Le Mans test day at the La Sarthe circuit, two weeks prior to the endurance classic. The test is an opportunity for drivers and teams to re-familiarise themselves with the eight-mile circuit in order to finalise the set-up for the round the clock race. This year, Aston Martin Racing will be defending its GT1 class win with two Gulf-sponsored DBR9s, numbered 007 and 009. Also competing in the event is an Aston Martin-powered LMP1 prototype, entered by Charouz Racing System, as well as two customer DBR9s from Team Modena and Vitaphone Racing. Conditions for the test day were a mixture of wet and dry weather, which limited running for most of the teams. Despite the changeable conditions, the teams were still able to carry out some useful preparation. The 007 DBR9 was crewed by Heinz-Harald Frentzen, Andrea Piccini and Karl Wendlinger, while 009 was driven by David Brabham and Antonio Garcia. The cars remaining driver, Darren Turner - who won the GT1 class along with Brabham in 009 last year - was absent due to touring car commitments in the UK, but he has plenty of previous Le Mans experience to fall back on when it comes to the race. The test day consisted of two sessions, from 9am to 1pm and 2pm to 6pm. During the lunch break, 20 Aston Martin road cars took to the La Sarthe circuit, as part of the 2009 model year V8 Vantage press launch. Aston Martin DBR9 007: Heinz-Harald Frentzen (D): "Although the conditions were extremely mixed, every bit of running at Le Mans is useful, as these are all conditions that could be replicated during the race. I last competed at Le Mans 16 years ago: it was interesting to be back! I dont remember much of the circuit at all, so it was useful to get my bearings. It was hard to do any detailed set-up work, but the balance of the car feels generally good - which is a very positive sign for the race to come." Andrea Piccini (I): "Its a pity that we didnt get more consistent weather as it was quite hard to get a good feeling. During my laps, half the circuit was dry - up to the Mulsanne straight - and the other half was wet. I was running on medium slicks, so it was tricky for me to get enough heat into the tyres and generate the grip we needed for a quick time. I last drove for Aston Martin at Le Mans in 2006, so it took me a little bit of time to get familiar with the car again but now I feel comfortable." Karl Wendlinger (A): "This was a very useful session to refresh my memory of the Le Mans circuit, which I last competed on in 2001. Theres a lot thats new since then, particularly the section around Tertre Rouge. Ive got experience of the DBR9 from the FIA GT Championship already; it feels very strong under acceleration and braking here - which will definitely help us in the race. We dont know what the weather will do during the race weekend, so Im glad we experienced the wet and tried a few different things today." Aston Martin DBR9 009 David Brabham (AUS): "We werent expecting any real surprises from the test day, and luckily that turned out to be the case. I drove a lot of the race last year in the wet - including the very last stint - so it all felt quite familiar today! I think everyones test programme was compromised by the weather today, but my personal goal was just to get used to the car again after a year out of it and I succeeded in that objective. Although we waited a bit I was still one of the first drivers out, so the track was extremely green and slippery - but it was all useful running." Antonio Garcia (E): "I was quite lucky compared to some of the other guys, as I managed to get a few laps in dry conditions. I made the most of that opportunity to push quite hard, and from that I feel confident that we will be competitive. Its difficult to draw too many detailed conclusions, but I think were well-prepared. I drove the DBR9 last year for a customer team, so it all feels quite normal; even the weather!" The LMP1 car entered by Charouz Racing System and driven by Jan Charouz (CZ), Tomas Enge (CZ) and Stefan Mucke (D) used the test day to get familiar with the conditions and work on the prototypes wet-weather set-up. Team Modenas DBR9, car number 59, will be driven by Terry Borcheller (USA), Christian Fittipaldi (BR) and Jos Menten (NL). The Vitaphone Racing car, numbered 53, will be driven by Peter Hardman (GB), Nick Leventis (GB), and Xavier Negrao (BR). Aston Martin Racing Team Principal George Howard-Chappell commented: "It was a very tricky day in terms of preparing for the race, with completely random weather. Still, it has been the same for everyone and at least all our drivers here got the chance to drive the car in a wide variety of conditions. Along with everyone else, weve got a lot of work still to do on Wednesday and Thursday of this week.

| Civic Selling Like Flapjacks, Could Outsell Accord For First Time [Industry News] June 2, 2008 12:30:00 Holy gas prices, Batman! Automotive News is reporting this morning strong sales of the Hondas gas-sipping Civic were up 14.8% to 111,695 units through the first four months of the year, and appeared to be looking good for May. Although well find out what the fifth month had to say when sales numbers are released later today, for the moment, ANs Kathy Jackson is reporting that Dick Colliver, Honda Americas sales chief claims hes expecting sales of 40,000 to 45,000 units during the month. That would be enough to top sales numbers of the Accord, the reigning sales champ from the number two super best awesome automaker from the land of the rising sun.
Despite still holding the title of Honda sales champ, the Accords only sold 122,430 through the month of April. With Civic output up at all three of Hondas production centers — providing a total production run for the first four months of over 144,000 units — Hondas looking at a 48-day supply of the budget sedan, a position thats forcing a look at squeezing out as many of the little buggers as they possibly can. Given that growth curve, the Civic could very well pass the Accord this month or next in sales.
Which is funny to us, because its not like the Civic sedan gets that much better gas mileage. We mean, this aint the diesel Euro-spec Civic we played with back in February. No, the EPA numbers on the Civic are a mere 25/36 for city/highway. The Accord on the other hand has numbers of 21/31 for city/highway. While yes, thats a decent-sized difference, its not enough to account for a 14.8% increase in sales on the Civic. Oh wait, we forgot — the Civic weighs in at a bargain-basement price of $15,645 for the four-banger with a five-speed slushbox. The Accord, with the same configuration, in comparison goes heavyweight on the price scale, selling for $20,995. Wethinks maybe this has as much to do with general economic fears as it has to do with specific economic fears on the price at the pump. Its a lot easier to pay off a car loan thats five grand cheaper when your house goes into foreclosure, aint it?
Whatever the reason, well be watching for Hondas numbers later today to see how the Civic fares, and whether it can beat its big brother. [via Automotive News (sub. req.)]

| VW CEO threatens to resign if Porsche interferes June 2, 2008 11:01:00Filed under: Etc., Euro, Audi, Porsche, Volkswagen It looks like Porsches aggressive advances at Volkswagen are less than welcome by Volkswagens management. Its CEO, Martin Winterkorn, has warned Porsche to keep its mitts out of operations, saying that he will resign his position if theres interference. Winterkorn isnt alone in his agitation, as Der Spigel reports Audi managers are concerned that Porsche will go a-meddling in Ingolstadt once its stake increases above 50 percent. Though VW, Audi, and Porsche are all cousins of a sort, Audis product line comes uncomfortably close to Porsches in some cases, which doesnt portend well for the continuation of the status quo. Stay tuned as "Alle Meine Kinder," brought to you by Dr. Ferdinand Porsche, continues.

| BMW to add further features, complications, to iDrive June 1, 2008 13:47:00Filed under: Gadgets, Tech, BMW
These days, technology and customization go hand-in-hand. Laptop computers and MP3 players now come in a rainbow of colors and your computers operating system can be made to suit your unique preferences. BMW has big plans in store for its oft-criticized iDrive system which would make it and the vehicle in which its installed extremely customizable as well. Simple choices such as color schemes and screensavers for the iDrives graphical user interface pale in comparison to the ability to adjust transmission shift points and engine boost levels in an effort to either increase fuel economy or improve overall performance. Multiple users will be able to make their own adjustments and save their settings and the car will know the driver based on which key fob is in close proximity.
There are way too many new features planned for iDrive than there is space in this post to display them. For the complete and exhaustive rundown, click here. Thankfully, changes will be accessible from a web-enabled computer, which should simplify the in-car user interface somewhat. Rest assured, though, BMWs iDrive, already overcomplicated in the opinion of many, wont be disappearing from its dash-mounted perch anytime soon. Thanks for the tip, gear_shift!

| BMW 123d hanging out in Michigan June 1, 2008 10:27:00Filed under: Spy Photos, Euro, Hatchbacks, BMW
Imagine, if you will, a compact rear-wheel-drive hatchback that runs from 0-62mph in a very respectable 6.9 seconds. Not too shabby. Now imagine that this same car could average 45 mpg (US)! Not possible, you say? Au contraire! In other parts of the world where they dont just use gasoline to power cars, this is not an unheard-of possibility. One shining example is the BMW 123d, which was launched in Europe last year. Powered by a twin-turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder diesel cranking out 204hp and 295lb-ft of torque, the 123d scores 45mpg (US) on the EU combined test cycle. For now at least, BMW isnt offering American consumers any of its four cylinder engines, but fuel system supplier Bosch has a fleet of European diesel vehicles that they use for promotional purposes. AutoblogGreen has previously tested the Smart ForTwo, Chrysler 300, and BMW 535d from this fleet and will soon be getting its paws on the three newest additions to the fleet. One of those cars is the 123d that you see above. Reader Typhoon5000 spotted this one in Flint MI the other day and shared some photos with us. Stay tuned for full reviews of this 123d and two other really cool diesels that you (unfortunately) cant buy. Thanks to Typhoon5000 for the tip and photos.

| Lithuanian foam sculptor does BMWs too May 31, 2008 19:34:00Filed under: Trends, Etc. Click on the above image for a photo gallery
Whether or not the foam-skinned car based on a Mercedes-Benz got your motor going yesterday, you have to give the artist credit for painstakingly completing not one, but two of these polyurethane-plated projects. Thanks to a readers tip, we found this BMW 6 Series-based interpretation wearing the same brilliant red paint, flashy 30-inch dubs, and dual triangulated exhaust tips.
While the sculptor has kept much of the Bangle-butt intact, the overall aesthetics on this execution are much more pleasing to the eye. A glance inside indicates this attempt isnt as thorough as the other (the interior appears merely painted, not sculpted). However, as witnessed by the junk in the door-mounted map pocket, this one is getting some use on the streets too. Thanks for the tip Tarakonaz!

| Spotted in the wild: 1968 Lamborghini Islero May 31, 2008 18:15:00Filed under: Sports/GTs, Lamborghini Click the Islero for a high-res gallery
For a car fan its always cool to be wandering around somewhere and stumble across an extremely rare automobile. Thats especially when its out on the road in a most unlikely of locales. My wife and I took a little road trip this weekend in the new Saab Turbo X (youll be hearing more about that soon!) to Yellow Springs, Ohio. For those unfamiliar with Yellow Springs, its a small town northeast of Dayton that is home to Antioch College and Dave Chappelle. As we were walking to get some dinner, I noticed a very red coupe with an extraordinarily long hood. It looked vaguely familiar, but I knew I had never seen one in the metal before. I grabbed my camera and started shooting away. It turns out the car was a GT known as the Lamborghini Islero. Isleros were built in 1968 and 69 following the end of the 400GT run and preceding the Jarama. Unfortunately for Lamborghini, the rather sedately-styled Islero didnt have the flash of the gorgeous Miura that debuted in 1969 and it never sold in large numbers. According to Lamborghini, only 225 were built including 70 "S" models in 1969 with slight body changes and a more luxurious interior. The Islero was propelled by Lamborghinis 4.0L 350hp V12. If the owner of this car sees this post please get in touch and share the story of your car.

| Audi R10 TDI using biofuel for the first time May 31, 2008 15:17:00Filed under: Motorsports, Hybrids/Alternative, Green, Supercars, Audi
In the world of alternative power, not all fuels are created equal. This fact is true with ethanol, where the alcohol can be made using fairly inefficient processes, some of which involve corn, or using more advanced cellulosic methods which do not use a foodstock. Diesel too can come from either petroleum or from non-dino sources. Youre probably aware that Audi has been assaulting various race tracks using its advanced diesel powered race cars, specifically its two-time Le Mans-winning R10 TDI, which has so far been running on what is known as gas-to-liquid (GTL) diesel fuel. With the 24 Hours of Le Mans just around the corner, Audi and Shell, the fuel provider for Audis race team, have announced that the team will be blending a small amount of biomass-to-liquid (BTL) fuel into its secret mixture. Shells BTL fuel is made from materials such as wood chips and will make its on-track debut on Sunday, June 1, as Audis R10 TDI begins its official Le Mans testing.

| Stink Fast! - Porsche Design cologne May 31, 2008 13:41:00Filed under: Gadgets, Etc., Porsche, Lifestyle
One thing some luxury-goods makers are missing out on are male-centric fragrances. Yankee Candle should come out with an entire "Garage Line" of scents like "Winter Ether," "Hydrocarbon Bliss," or the more subtle "Mustang Interior," and "Exhaust." Theres a veritable treasure trove of olfactory delight just waiting to be mined by a master nose. Porsche Design isnt waiting for someone else to cash in on this brilliant plan, and the company is releasing its own line of products called "The Essence." Porsche Design is a separate unit from our friends who screw together conveyances, and the firm focuses on industrial design when not fiddling with esters and bergamot. The scents are described as having a combination of cold metallic and warm organic tones, and will be available in aftershave, hair gel, body wash, and deodorant. Now, you can get all dolled up in your Porsche odorificness, slip on a Porsche polo shirt, and go drive that Boxster to the golf course while wearing Porsche sunglasses. Once there, of course, youll use Callaway clubs. Thanks for the tip, Tony!

| Belgium: Dodge wants you to steam up the windows in the Journey May 31, 2008 12:16:00Filed under: Euro, Marketing/Advertising, Crossovers/CUVs, Dodge Click above for a gallery of the Baby Made on Board promo materials
When we read the tip from reader Thijs B. telling us that in Belgium, Dodge is planning a Journey launch promo centered around backseat baby-making, we thought it was a big joke. So we started using our Google powers to see what else we could dig up. And guess what? Its legit.
If you go to babymadeonboard.be, youll be greeted by the screen above, which features a play on those annoying "Baby On Board" window signs that were ubiquitous during the 80s. Its paired with a countdown timer that will zero out on the weekend of June 14, which is when the Dodge Journey officially launches in Belgium. A quick WHOIS lookup on DNS.be reveals that the sites domain name is registered to someone at the Brussels office of Proximity BBDO, a BBDO partner. BBDO is Chryslers ad agency.
More Googling led us to a Dodge press release posted on a Belgian media portal. The car is being targeted toward men, and its launch slogan roughly translates to "Become a father, stay a man." According to the PR, Dodge suggests that "everyone try out the back seat of the Dodge Journey in a little unorthodox manner." Well, thats one way of getting folks to look past Chryslers lamentable interiors. People whose "backseat trial" is successful and subsequently produce a newborn child 9 months after the cars launch weekend have a chance to win themselves a new Dodge Journey, and the babys picture will be posted to the website.
We dont think that Dodge really wants people taking special test drives out of Belgian dealerships for the purpose of steaming up the windows the old fashioned way (we can imagine porters quitting en masse on June 13th if this were the case). This particular assignment can probably be completed at home, too. To help encourage people to take action, however, all Journey floor models will have those "Baby Made on Board" signs in their windows. If youre in Belgium, are planning a family, and are in the market for a new car, you might want to (ahem) get to work on or around June 14. Maybe earlier. After all, a little practice never hurts. Thanks for the tip, Thijs!

| Spy Shots: BMW 3-Series facelift May 31, 2008 10:07:00Filed under: Spy Photos, Euro, BMW For those fond of delving deep into E90 minutiae, these are the best shots yet showing off the subtle changes coming to the BMW 3-series. For the rest of us, the tweaks are largely inconsequential. World Car Fans has unearthed some of the clearest shots yet, and the change that most people will notice are the taillamps, which look to get a slightly different shape. It even appears that the cutlines between the taillamp pieces on the trunklid wont line up with the rest of the cluster mounted in the quarter panel - asymmetry. The mirrors look to gain large repeaters for the blinkers, possibly just a camouflage ruse, and minor updates likely go on inside and underhood, too. Also likely to be quite noticeable once the wraps come off is a reshaped front fascia, which appears to place foglamps next to the license plate. Overall, a mild refreshing until a new 3-series can be whipped up. In the meantime, the new 7 will set the template for BMWs to come.

| New Aston Martin V8 Vantage, Now With A Little More V8 [Aston Martin V8 Vantage] May 30, 2008 21:40:00 The Aston Martin V8 Vantage is a gorgeous car, but anyone whos ever driven one has always been left with a feeling that the V8s bark was bigger than its bite. Actually, the barks not so loud either. OK, really — its just a pretty dog. Sure you could send the Vantage off to Prodrive for some performance tuning, or if you didnt mind sitting around for awhile, you could wait for the mighty V12-powered Vantage RS to come out. But nobody with a need for more speed wants to wait. So now, the old 4.3-liter V8 is being enlarged to a bigger 4.7-liter V8.
That means power is now up to 420 HP and 347 lb-ft of torque. How does it feel? Well, the loud exhaust gurgle is said to have been toned down a bit, which combined with a 0.2-second quicker 0-to-60 time, means the Vantages bite is now actually more proportionate to its bark. But only by a little bit. Were also told that the new extra power is said to be noticeable, but not overwhelmingly impressive. So, it looks like all you speed freaks will still have to wait for the V12. [Autocar]

This is a head-to-head battle weve been waiting to see: BMWs new M3 versus a Dinan-tuned 335i coupe. But were only going to talk numbers and let the video tell the tale.
The BMW 335i has proven itself as a credible player in the sports coupe segment, particularly with a tweaked ECU to extract maximum output from its twin-turbod 3.0-liter inline-six. Dinan announced its Stage 3 package a few months back, which includes a fully-adjustable suspension and a handful of engine mods that bring output up to 406 hp and a kidney-punishing 460 lb.-ft. of torque (at 4,300 RPM). But it doesnt come cheap. All the necessary Dinan kit to get it up to Stage 3 spec (and get that nifty badge on the boot) costs around $14,000. But compared to the $71,000 $56,500 (no mark-up, no oxygen) base price of the new M3, its still a steal. While the M3 has the peak horsepower advantage, you cant ignore the allure of the Dinan 335is torque and lower curb weight. Will it be enough to match the M3? Hit the jump to find out.Continue reading VIDEO: WebridesTV pits the BMW M3 against the Dinan 335i Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

The link between Volkswagen and Porsche is about to get stronger, but VWs Swedish contingent has already created a special edition to honor the alliance. The VW Caddy has lived a staid life as a popular work truck in Europe, but the Swedes apparently think it could be so much more. So its releasing 250 Carrera Cup Edition Caddies outfitted with black, 17-inch wheels wrapped in 225/45 R17 rubber, a new body kit, red-on-white paint scheme with Porsches signature "Carrera" text, two-tone leather sport seats, a leather steering wheel and shifter. The 2.0-liter TDI mill is putting out 140 hp and 236 lb.-ft. of torque and with a fire extinguisher mounted on the diamond-plate floor boards, we think we might have found the perfect track-day accomplice to join that GT3 RS weve been building in our dreams.
